Tell Your Attorney General to Follow the ATF’s Lead

To: My State Attorney General

WHEREAS: The Right of the People to keep and bear arms is protected by the U.S. Constitution, and that right includes suppressors and short-barreled firearms; and

WHEREAS: Following the ruling in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF and the Department of Justice’s decision not to appeal, the ATF announced on October 9, 2026, that it will no longer require approval or registration under the National Firearms Act to make or transfer suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, or “any other weapons”; and

WHEREAS: Fifteen states still tie the legality of these items to federal NFA registration, leaving law-abiding gun owners who follow federal law exposed to prosecution under state law; and

WHEREAS: Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch has already issued an opinion declaring federal suppressor registration voluntary in her state, proving an Attorney General can act on this right now; and

WHEREAS: Twenty-one state Attorneys General urged Congress in September to repeal provisions of the National Firearms Act, and no state should keep enforcing a federal registry that Washington itself has abandoned;

THEREFORE: I urge you to immediately issue formal guidance that your office will not pursue charges against law-abiding citizens for possessing suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, or “any other weapons” that are not registered under the National Firearms Act, and to support permanent repeal of every state law tied to NFA registration.

The National Association for Gun Rights will keep me informed about your actions.

Dear Fellow Patriot,

On October 9th, the ATF stopped requiring approval or registration under the National Firearms Act to make or transfer suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and “any other weapons.”

No waiting months on ATF approval. No federal registry.

But 15 states built their gun laws around that federal paperwork. In those states, legally owning a suppressor or a short-barreled rifle can still hinge on a registration Washington just made voluntary.

Follow federal law, and your own state could still treat you as a criminal.

Your state Attorney General can fix that. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch already did, declaring federal suppressor registration voluntary in her state on October 12th.

Every Attorney General in these states can follow the ATF’s lead. That’s why I need you to sign your petition right now.

Your National Association for Gun Rights will deliver every signature directly to the Attorneys General in the states where this conflict still exists.

For Freedom,
